The town hall, also called the Pantheon of Leuven, is a singular historical building. It is inspired by the Late Gothic style, with its four corner spires, two middle spires and central access stair.
The beautiful Saint-Peter's Church is the oldest church in Leuven. The original building was erected in the Romance style in the 11th century, but it was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 15th century.
The Oude Markt is the beating heart of Leuven, especially when the sun's out. The square is surrounded by countless bars and restaurants, where you can relax in between two visits and sample the numerous local beers.
The Grand Béguinage constitutes a quarter of more than 6 hectares. This verdant oasis of tranquility housed a real beguinage since the 13th century, until it was turned into a public park and modern housing.
The Catholic University of Leuven is the oldest university in Belgium. It was originally comprised of four faculties (arts, canon law and civil law, medicine, and theology). Today, the building accomodates the university's administration.
Leuven's current university library was completely rebuilt on the ruins of the university hall, which was destroyed during the First World War.
The dukes of Arenberg built the Arenberg castle in the 16th century. In the 19th century, as a result of countless renovations, the residential castle bore the characteristics of many different styles: Late Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Gothic.
The Papal College was founded in 1523 by Pope Adrian VI, to house theology students. At the end of the 18th century it was completely rebuilt in the classicistic style.
M is Leuven's magnificent new museum. It opened its doors in 2009 and exhibits unique 19th-century Flemish Primitives , who painted or sculpted in the flamboyant Gothic style.
The Treasury of Saint Peter's Church is a wonderful Brabantian Gothic edifice from the 15th century. It accommodates a museum with different paintings and sculptures from the M collection, including "The Seven Sacraments" by Rogier van der Weyden.
Leuven's botanical garden is the oldest of its kind in Belgium. It boasts more than 800 different plant species from all over the world, in open air or the greenhouse.
Leuven's tourist office recommends a cycling trip past four old abbeys. These religious buildings are important tourist attractions, and a testimony to the region's rich religious history.
